Course Summary

The Level 4 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace has been accredited by the regulators of England, Wales and Northern Ireland and is part of both the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)

Ofqual qualification reference: 600/1953/0.

The qualification is intended for learners already working in the capacity of supervisor or manager and those who are preparing to start work at this level. Learners gaining this qualification will know that supervisors and managers have legal and moral obligations to ensure health and safety within a business and that this includes obligations to employees, contractors, visitors and suppliers. Its subject areas are regarded by the Health and Safety Executive as being important to developing safe working procedures in the workplace.

Pre-requisites

Candidates must:

  • Be a minimum age of 16
  • Carry out pre course work – to complete a safe system of work and a risk assessment

It is advised that learners already hold the Level 3 Award in Health & Safety, or equivalent.

Validity of Award

This qualification does not expire.

Length of Course

36 guided learning hours (5 days)

Course Information

The qualification covers the following topics:

  • The duties and responsibilities of employers, employees and others in relation to health and safety at work
  • The process by which health and safety is managed in an organisation
  • Procedures for developing and implementing risk assessment
  • Procedures for developing and implementing safe systems of work
  • How to review health and safety across an organisation.

Each of the topics above are made up of smaller learning objectives that complete the course syllabus.

This qualification goes into great depth of Health & Safety and therefore it ensures learners have a thorough knowledge of the subject; its focus is on the importance of developing, implementing and monitoring Health & Safety procedures.

Assessment

This qualification is assessed through a 2-part examination consisting of the development of a safe system of work and risk assessment (work based) and a written examination which is 2 ½ hours in duration.
